Angelos Giannakopoulos arrested in massive Greek tax fraud investigation

Greek authorities, specifically the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (DAOE), have launched a major operation targeting Angelos Giannakopoulos, owner of the ‘Choriatiko’ bakery chain. The investigation centers on an alleged large-scale economic fraud and tax evasion scheme estimated to exceed 100 million euros.

Authorities are examining an extensive network involving approximately 520 companies. The scheme reportedly utilized ‘straw men’ to conceal true ownership and facilitate fraudulent transactions, including the non-payment of VAT and social security contributions to EFKA. The investigation also covers Giannakopoulos’s broader business interests, such as nightclubs and coastal establishments.

In addition to financial crimes, police are investigating potential links to organized crime, including human trafficking and prostitution. Giannakopoulos, who had been residing in Dubai, was arrested in the Ioannina region while attempting to flee to Albania. Alongside the owner, a key accountant has also been detained. The operation has resulted in approximately 50 arrests, with more expected as investigations continue across Athens, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Volos.
