Choriatiko bakery fraud investigation expands to Ireland

Greek authorities are investigating a massive tax evasion and money laundering scheme centered around the ‘Choriatiko’ bakery chain. The investigation has expanded internationally following the discovery of suspicious bank accounts in Ireland. Haralampos Vourliotis, head of the Greek Anti-Money Laundering Authority, is initiating procedures to freeze the identified funds.

Law enforcement has arrested 59 individuals, including 20 ‘straw men’ who acted as nominal owners for various companies. Investigators are examining more than 400 companies and approximately 520 bank accounts across multiple jurisdictions, including Bulgaria, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Denmark, and the Cayman Islands.

The alleged scheme has caused an estimated 100,000,000 euro loss to the Greek state. Authorities have also identified approximately 6,000,000 euros in accounts linked to the wife of the alleged ringleader, Angelos Giannakopoulos, and two associates. Suspects face charges including criminal organization, fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering.
