Chorzów overpass demolition plan faces opposition from Katowice and Bytom

Officials from Katowice and Bytom are expressing significant reservations regarding a proposal by Chorzów Mayor Szymon Michałek to declassify National Road 79 (DK79) and demolish the existing overpass (estakada).

Katowice Vice President Maciej Biskupski stated that he does not see the sense in the proposal, noting that closing a national road requires the creation of bypasses and new traffic flows within a densely populated urban area. He emphasized that such a decision should be made collectively by the mayors of the affected cities, as it impacts the entire regional communication system.

Bytom Mayor Mariusz Wołosz argued that any demolition should only occur after new connections are established to ensure continuity of movement. He also raised concerns regarding the financial risks of changing the road's category from national to county, which would shift maintenance costs to the municipalities. He noted that Bytom would not be able to participate in the costs of the demolition.
