Chosha praecursor discovery reveals transitional insect evolution

An international research team has discovered a new species, Chosha praecursor, which provides significant insights into insect evolution. The fossil, dating back approximately 324 million years to the late Mississippian period, was analyzed using modern microscopy techniques by researchers including Professor Cai Chenyang from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology and Erik Tihelka from the University of Cambridge.

The discovery fills a critical research gap between the divergence of hexapods from crustaceans roughly 450 million years ago and the appearance of definitive insect fossils in the Carboniferous period. While the specimen possesses a typical insect body plan with six legs and two antennae, it also features a long abdomen and a paddle-like tail characteristic of crustaceans.

Researchers from the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology suggest this hybrid anatomy indicates that the early ancestral insect likely led a semi-aquatic, amphibious lifestyle, inhabiting moist microhabitats at the transition between aquatic and terrestrial environments.
