CHP leaders address disability rights and retiree economic struggles
Republican People's Party (CHP) Vice President Necdet Saraç held a coordination meeting in Ankara to prepare for a major disability rights gathering scheduled for December 5. During the meeting, Saraç emphasized the need to shift from a medical model of disability to a social model, arguing that the primary issue is not the individuals themselves but the lack of accessibility in social environments. He advocated for rights-based social policies that prioritize independent living and equal opportunity, specifically targeting 100 percent accessibility in public transportation.
In a separate engagement in Yozgat, Saraç and Vice President Adnan Demirci addressed the economic hardships facing retirees. Saraç noted that approximately 12.5 million retirees in Turkey receive pensions between 23,000 and 40,000 lira, which falls below the estimated 37,000 lira hunger threshold required for food alone. He criticized the current economic conditions and announced a dedicated retirees' meeting for November 7 to discuss solutions for the millions living near the poverty line.
