Former Conservative cabinet minister Chris Alexander has entered the race to become Toronto’s next mayor. Alexander, who served as Canada’s immigration minister from 2013 to 2015 and as ambassador to Afghanistan between 2003 and 2005, is a former Member of Parliament for the Ajax‑Pickering riding. A campaign spokesman said Alexander will officially register his candidacy on Wednesday morning.

In his announcement, Alexander said Toronto has been “standing still” for three years and outlined five priority areas for his platform: the city’s economy, transit system, housing and infrastructure. Detailed, costed proposals for these priorities are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
