Chris Brown challenges court order for financial examination

Singer Chris Brown has filed a motion to reject a request for a judgment-debtor examination in Van Nuys, California. The request was made by Maria Avila, a former housekeeper seeking to enforce a $12.9 million judgment against Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC.

The judgment stems from a June jury verdict regarding a 2020 dog attack at Brown’s Tarzana property that seriously injured Avila. The examination would allow Avila to question Brown regarding his finances, income, and assets to satisfy the court-awarded damages.

In his court filing, Brown argues that the examination should not proceed as proposed because he resides in Nevada, which is more than 150 miles from the courthouse. He also cited his ongoing co-headlining tour with Usher, stating that his travel schedule makes attending the hearing difficult. Brown’s legal team noted that California guidance generally limits such examinations to within a 150-mile radius of a person's residence or business.
