Chris Brown receives suspended prison sentence for London nightclub attack

Singer Chris Brown has been sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, following a 2023 assault at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London. The sentencing at Southwark Crown Court follows Brown’s guilty plea to affray regarding the incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw.

Surveillance footage showed Brown striking Diaw four times with a tequila bottle during a 20-second confrontation, with two of the blows hitting the producer in the head. Judge Tony Baumgartner described the actions as “plainly dangerous” and noted that the violence posed a significant risk to others in the crowded venue. The judge emphasized that Brown’s fame and professional status do not entitle him to “special treatment,” asserting that “the law applies equally to everyone.”

Brown’s vocal coach, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, also received a four-month suspended sentence for his involvement. Both men were ordered to pay court costs. The judge cited Brown’s guilty plea, stable employment, and recent clean record as factors in the decision to suspend the prison term, noting that he would only face incarceration if he commits further offenses during the 12-month period.
