Chris Brown receives suspended prison sentence for London nightclub attack
American R&B singer Chris Brown has been sentenced to eight months in prison by a London court following a violent incident at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair in February 2023. The sentence, handed down by Judge Tony Baumgartner at Southwark Crown Court, has been suspended for 12 months, meaning the 37-year-old will avoid immediate incarceration provided he complies with court conditions.
Brown pleaded guilty to affray after prosecutors detailed a “vicious and unprovoked” attack on music producer Abraham Diaw. Evidence showed Brown striking Diaw twice in the head with a tequila bottle, while his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu (also known as HoodyBaby), participated in the assault with punches. The victim required hospital treatment for head and knee injuries.
Akinlolu also received a four-month prison sentence, which was also suspended for 12 months. During the sentencing, Judge Baumgartner emphasized that Brown’s professional success and fame do not entitle him to special treatment, stating, “The law applies equally to everyone.”
Brown had been under arrest warrants since the incident but was not taken into custody until May 2025, when he returned to the United Kingdom for his world tour and was detained in Manchester.
