Chris Froome reveals near-fatal 2025 training accident

Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome has revealed the life-threatening severity of a training accident suffered in southern France in August 2025. Speaking to Cyclingnews, the 41-year-old British cyclist described how he nearly died after colliding with a traffic sign at high speed.

The accident resulted in catastrophic injuries, including a collapsed right lung, a fractured lumbar vertebra, and multiple broken ribs that imploded into his thoracic cavity. Most critically, a broken rib tore his pericardium, leaving his heart exposed and causing massive internal bleeding. Froome credited his survival to the rapid arrival of emergency services within seven to eight minutes.

Following the crash, Froome underwent extensive medical treatment, including surgery to install metal plates to reconstruct his collapsed chest wall. He also faced complications from infections related to the surgical hardware. The injuries ultimately led to his retirement from professional cycling; Froome stated he has no desire to return to the sport and is simply grateful to be alive.
