Chris Rock credits Scott Rudin’s coaching for filmmaking growth

During a keynote conversation at the Toronto International Film Festival, comedian and director Chris Rock discussed how producer Scott Rudin’s demanding approach influenced his filmmaking career.

Rock, speaking with TIFF chief executive Cameron Bailey, credited Rudin’s “hard coaching” with helping him improve, specifically regarding his 2014 comedy “Top Five.” Rock noted that while Rudin has a controversial reputation involving allegations of bullying and abusive behavior, he found the intense pressure beneficial for his professional growth.

Rock explained his preference for this style by stating, “Everybody doesn’t respond to a hug... Scott really pushed me in a way I hadn’t been pushed in a long time, and it was great.” He added that the experience taught him to never settle and to always pursue the highest quality talent both in front of and behind the camera.
