Chris Rock returns to directing with Hollywood satire ‘Misty Green’

Comedian Chris Rock has returned to directing with the comedy-drama ‘Misty Green’, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, distributed by A24, stars Rosalind Eleazar as a once-successful actress struggling with addiction, financial instability, and a fading career in Hollywood.

Rock, who also wrote and stars in the film, stated that the project aims to challenge Hollywood’s tendency to portray Black women through relentlessly positive lenses, opting instead for a complex and messy protagonist. The film features an ensemble cast including Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick, and Topher Grace.

Critics at the festival have praised the film, with some calling it one of the best Hollywood satires in years and highlighting Eleazar’s performance as a potential Oscar contender. Rock also noted that filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson provided feedback on the project, offering ‘a tweak here or there’ as both a friend and a critic.
