Chris Slade announces retirement from drumming

Welsh drummer Chris Slade has announced his retirement from professional drumming after a career spanning approximately 60 years. The veteran musician, known for his work with AC/DC, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, and The Firm, shared the news via a social media video message.

Slade cited health complications following a stroke he suffered roughly seven years ago as the primary reason for his decision. He noted that the lasting effects of the stroke have increasingly hindered his ability to perform. In his announcement, he stated, “It’s with a heavy heart that I’m announcing my retirement from drumming,” adding that while he wished to continue performing into his 80s like other rock legends, his health makes it impossible.

Slade began his professional career at age 16 performing with Tom Jones. In addition to his musical career, he has previously discussed working on an autobiography.
