Chris Smalling praises Mourinho’s trust as he eyes youth‑coaching projects

Former Roma defender Chris Smalling said José Mourinho always gave him confidence, even when injuries limited him. He recalled receiving injections for a fractured toe because Mourinho wanted him to keep playing, noting that the coach could have chosen another centre‑back but preferred him. Smalling highlighted their shared success, including Roma’s 2022 Conference League triumph. After leaving Roma, he spent two seasons with Saudi club Al‑Fayha and is now a free agent at 36. He confirmed he has no intention of becoming a manager, but plans to devote time to educational programmes for young footballers in partnership with the Global Institute of Sport. Smalling added that he remains physically fit, still passionate about playing, and will consider future opportunities once his playing career ends.
