Chrissie Hynde documentary ‘Pretenders’ premieres at TIFF

The documentary ‘Pretenders’, directed by Joss Crowley, is making its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film chronicles the emergence and evolution of the iconic rock band led by Chrissie Hynde, featuring archival material and commentary from figures such as Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, and Johnny Marr.

Hynde expressed reluctance regarding the project, noting that she did not particularly enjoy the extensive interview process which spanned three years. She stated, “I haven't watched it, and I won't watch it,” explaining that she is not keen on sitting around to hear her own story told. One of her primary motivations for participating was to highlight the influence of the band’s early guitarist, James Honeyman-Scott.

The film captures a sense of tension due to Hynde’s cautious approach to being filmed. While she provided the backbone of the documentary through interviews, she often maintained boundaries regarding which aspects of her life and the band's history she was willing to discuss.
