Christ the Redeemer escalators shut for renovation, visitor capacity halved

The moving walkways that serve the platform of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro were taken out of service on 3 August to be replaced. The work, part of a broader revitalisation of the Alto Corcovado that began in late 2024, is scheduled to finish by the end of May 2027.

During the works the number of visitors allowed on the summit at any one time has been reduced by 50 %. Access to the monument remains open via train, van or trail, and the existing elevators continue to operate only to the second floor. From there visitors must climb an 80‑step stone staircase. New equipment – four modern escalators and two inclined elevators – will be installed to improve durability, energy use and capacity, while specialised chair‑escalators and wheelchair‑compatible cars will provide additional accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

ICMBio, the agency that manages the Tijuca National Park, advises visitors to purchase tickets in advance and to use the accessible transport options available at the Visitor Assistance Centre.
