Christa Pike execution challenge denied by special master

Special Master W. Mark Ward has denied an emergency motion to reopen hearings regarding the execution protocol for Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row. Pike is scheduled to be executed on September 30.

Her legal team argued that the state’s lethal injection process could violate her constitutional rights due to health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder and a blood-clotting disorder that may complicate IV placement. They proposed alternatives such as using a central line immediately or utilizing hanging, but the investigator's report stated the team failed to prove these methods would prevent substantial risk of pain or needless suffering.

Additionally, Pike’s attorneys challenged the competency of the Tennessee Department of Correction physician involved in the process, citing his participation in previous executions. Ward ruled that the physician’s intention to participate does not guarantee he will be on the execution team, noting that the state selects participants 30 days prior to the date. The legal team has until next Friday to file objections before the Tennessee Supreme Court makes a final determination.
