Tennessee to execute Christa Pike, first woman in 200 years

Christa Pike, 50, is scheduled for execution in Tennessee on September 30, 2026. If the execution proceeds, she will be the first woman to be put to death in the state in over 200 years.

Pike was convicted in 1996 for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer at the University of Tennessee campus. The crime, which involved a pentagram carved into the victim's chest, remains a high-profile case due to its brutality.

Pike's legal team has filed a 226-page clemency petition, requesting that Governor Bill Lee commute her sentence to life without parole. The defense argues that Pike's actions were heavily influenced by a history of severe childhood sexual, physical, and mental abuse, including multiple instances of rape.

Additionally, Pike has requested that her lethal injection be carried out by an all-female team to avoid potential psychological trauma stemming from her history of abuse. She has indicated that if an all-female team cannot be provided, she will seek execution by hanging. The victim's mother, May Martinez, has expressed strong opposition to these requests, stating that Pike is attempting to manipulate the justice system.
