Christa Pike scheduled for Tennessee execution on September 30
Christa Pike, 50, is scheduled for execution in Tennessee on September 30 via lethal injection. If carried out, she will be the state’s first female execution since 1819. Pike was convicted in 1996 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, a crime committed when Pike was 18 years old.
Pike’s legal team has filed a petition for clemency, requesting her sentence be commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The defense argues that her actions at 18 cannot be separated from a childhood marked by severe physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Additionally, attorneys have challenged Tennessee’s lethal injection protocols, citing Pike’s history of difficult blood draws and fears regarding the use of a central line during the procedure.
In recent statements, Pike described the psychological toll of awaiting her execution, noting that the definitive timeline has caused extreme mental distress and nightmares.
