Christa Pike survives botched execution in Tennessee
Medical experts have expressed shock following the failed execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee, describing the procedure as a series of professional failures that would be considered medical malpractice in a hospital setting.
During the attempt to administer a lethal dose of pentobarbital, an unidentified four-person intravenous team spent nearly an hour struggling to locate a vein in Pike's arm. Instead of entering the vein, the drug accumulated in the surrounding tissues, causing Pike to report intense, burning pain before losing consciousness. The execution was halted after approximately 90 minutes, and Pike required emergency medical care, including being placed on a ventilator for several days.
Jonathan Groner, professor emeritus of clinical surgery at Ohio State University, characterized the incompetence displayed during the procedure as ‘unfathomable.’ Pike, who was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmert, remains in critical condition with concerns regarding potential brain death.
