Christa Pike survives botched lethal injection in Tennessee

Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is alive and receiving medical care after a botched lethal injection attempt on September 30. Her attorneys reported on October 6 that Pike is conscious and speaking, though her prognosis remains unclear following what they described as a medically unprecedented recovery.

Pike, 50, was taken to a Nashville-area hospital after the execution procedure failed. Witnesses reported that Pike complained of intense pain in her arm shortly after the first injection and observed her breathing deeply, snoring, and moving during the process. Prison officials closed the curtains in the execution chamber twice during the procedure, including one instance lasting approximately 50 minutes.

Pike was originally sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. While a federal appeals court had issued a last-minute stay based on Pike’s history of childhood trauma, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that stay, allowing the state to proceed. Pike currently remains in the hospital, where she is reportedly handcuffed and shackled to her bed due to severe damage to her arms.
