Christa Pike execution stayed by federal court in Tennessee

Christa Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row, had her execution stayed by a federal appeals court just hours before it was scheduled to take place at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals issued the stay to allow for a review of whether Pike’s history of childhood sexual abuse and rape was adequately considered during her 1996 sentencing.

Pike was convicted of the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a crime committed when Pike was 18. Her legal team argues that her mental health conditions, including PTSD and bipolar disorder, and her history of trauma should have influenced the jury's decision regarding the death penalty.

Following the initial stay, the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene. The Supreme Court subsequently vacated the stay, ruling that the execution could proceed if carried out before midnight local time.
