ChristenUnie seeks changes to Dutch defense tax proposal

The ChristenUnie political party is seeking adjustments to the proposed ‘vrijheidsbijdrage’ (freedom contribution), a coalition plan to increase income tax starting in 2027 to fund additional defense spending. Member of Parliament Pieter Grinwis stated following discussions with Finance Minister Eelco Heinen that the cabinet acknowledges the current plan may not be optimal.

Grinwis argued against funding defense through increased taxes on workers, noting that the CPB expects the measure to cause a slight decline in purchasing power. Instead, the ChristenUnie suggests alternatives such as taxing highly profitable companies or increasing taxes on significant wealth. The party also advocates for maintaining low healthcare deductibles and adjusting laws regarding income from wealth.

Minister Heinen has heard these alternatives, and further negotiations regarding the 2027 budget are expected to continue next week with a broader representation of parties, including JA21, SGP, and BBB.
