Christian Apologetic Alliance defends mission school identity

The Christian Apologetic Alliance has rejected calls to alter the religious identity of Christian mission schools to accommodate the practices of Muslim and other non-Christian students. This response follows a press release from the Ghana Muslim Students Association (GMSA) regarding the rights and welfare of Muslim students within these institutions.

The Alliance maintains that while individual religious freedom must be protected, it does not grant students the right to redesign or change the established traditions, worship practices, and disciplinary frameworks of schools founded on Christian values. The group argued that religious tolerance should be distinguished from institutional identity, asserting that mission schools were built on specific religious philosophies that are integral to their character.

Furthermore, the Alliance contested the argument that public funding necessitates the modification of a school’s religious character. They emphasized the historical role of missionaries in establishing Ghana’s formal education system and called on the government, the Ghana Education Service, and school authorities to preserve the historical identity of these institutions.
