Christian Aranda accused of exposing therapeutic abortion patient data
Peruvian lawmaker Christian Aranda, representing Renovación Popular, has faced accusations of violating patient privacy after exposing details regarding a woman's request for a therapeutic abortion at the Hospital Regional Guillermo Díaz de la Vega in Abancay.
Aranda stated that his actions were part of his parliamentary oversight duties to ensure medical procedures comply with legal protocols. He denied publishing the patient's identity or personal data. However, journalist Cristian Rebosio released a version of the document posted by the lawmaker, claiming the original image contained the woman's name and could expose her to harassment.
Brenda Álvarez, director of Proyecta Igualdad, criticized the move, stating that parliamentary oversight does not grant the right to access confidential medical histories without consent. She emphasized that therapeutic abortion is a legal right and that medical professionals are legally obligated to maintain patient confidentiality.
