Christian Association of Nigeria urges Ogun Governor to reject pregnancy termination bill
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ogun State Chapter, has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to reject the recently passed Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill. The legislation, titled ‘H. B. No. 036/OG/2026 – Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026’, was passed by the Ogun State House of Assembly to reduce maternal mortality and promote reproductive health rights.
CAN Chairman and Bishop of Egba Diocese, The Right Reverend Emmanuel Oludaisi Adekunle, argued that the bill contradicts the sanctity of human life and violates Sections 33 and 38 of the 1999 Constitution regarding the right to life and freedom of conscience. The association expressed concern that the law might compel Christian medical workers and faith-based institutions to act against their religious convictions.
Additionally, CAN noted that religious leaders were not included in the public hearings for the bill. While opposing the current legislation, the group stated it remains willing to partner with the government to address maternal mortality and protect women through counseling and support.
