Christian Association of Nigeria vows to hold government accountable

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared its intention to hold the Federal Government accountable regarding citizen protection, constitutional rights, and national welfare. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja to mark the association’s 50th anniversary, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh emphasized that the organization is neither a political opposition party nor a group intended to praise the government, but a Christian institution with a national responsibility.

Okoh stated that while CAN will support policies that improve the welfare of Nigerians and cooperate with authorities to foster good governance, it will not remain silent in the face of injustice, suffering, or threats to constitutional rights. He specifically called for stronger action against insecurity, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence.

Looking toward the 2027 general elections, Okoh warned political parties and candidates against weaponizing religion, ethnicity, and regional sentiments. He urged leaders to ensure that elections remain a contest of ideas and policies rather than a source of violence or hate speech. Additionally, he cautioned against reducing national crises to religious confrontations, noting that many conflicts stem from land disputes, political power, and resource competition.
