Christian Association of Nigeria warns against using Jesus' name in politics
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a warning to politicians and their supporters against using the name of Jesus Christ to advance partisan interests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh stated that while political discourse can be intense, the name of Christ should not be used as a political tool, campaign slogan, or weapon to promote specific candidates. The warning follows recent comments by Precious Oruche, known as Mama Pee, who invoked Jesus Christ during a political argument regarding Peter Obi and the upcoming elections.
Okoh emphasized that Nigerians are free to support or criticize candidates such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Bola Tinubu, but political loyalty must not diminish the reverence due to Christ. He urged political actors to focus their campaigns on competence, character, policies, and performance rather than portraying politicians as messianic figures.
