Christian asylum seekers report challenges in the Netherlands

Christian asylum seekers in the Netherlands are reporting difficulties regarding their status and treatment within reception centers. In Rijswijk, several Iranian Christian residents at an asylum seekers' center (AZC) have raised concerns that they are treated differently than Muslim residents, claiming their complaints are often ignored by staff.

While the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) does not recognize this pattern of unequal treatment, national organizations supporting Christian asylum seekers report receiving similar signals from various locations across the country.

Legal expert Lineke Blijdorp, who specializes in asylum law, notes that many refugees face life-or-death consequences based on their procedures. She highlights a specific challenge for converts, such as those from Iran, who often struggle to provide the necessary proof of their religious conversion to satisfy the requirements of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). Blijdorp observes that misunderstandings or incorrect translations regarding religious practices can impact the assessment of these cases.
