Christian B. sentence under review after prosecution appeal

The prosecution has filed an appeal against the sentence handed to Christian B. for insulting a prison employee in Oldenburg. While the defendant admitted to the insult occurring in October 2023, the legal proceedings regarding the severity of the punishment continue.

The Oldenburg District Court recently sentenced the 49-year-old to 150 daily rates of 20 euros each. This followed a previous ruling by the Oldenburg District Court that had imposed a six-week prison sentence, a decision rejected by both the defense and the prosecution. During the most recent proceedings, the defense requested a fine of 90 daily rates of 10 euros, while the prosecution sought two and a half months of imprisonment.

Because the prosecution has filed for revision, the sentence is not yet legally binding. The Higher Regional Court must now review the case. If the appeal is successful, a different chamber of the District Court will be required to decide on the penalty. Christian B., who remains a suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, is currently residing in a container in Kiel under constant police surveillance.
