Christianity observes Season of Creation focusing on water
Christian denominations worldwide are observing the ‘Season of Creation’ from September 1 to October 4, 2026. This annual ecumenical period focuses on environmental stewardship and the protection of the planet.
The theme for this year, ‘Make Living Water Spring Forth,’ centers on the vital importance of water. Religious organizations, including the Diocese of Coimbra and the Protestant Federation of France, are using the period to highlight the threats posed by pollution, scarcity, and climate change. The initiative calls for an ‘integral ecological conversion’ to address the interconnected crises of environmental degradation and social injustice.
Reflecting on the principles of the encyclical Laudato Si’, participants are encouraged to view water not merely as a commodity but as a sacred gift. The observance emphasizes that the degradation of ecosystems, such as forests and oceans, disproportionately affects vulnerable populations and contributes to global warming and health crises.
