Christian communities in West Bank face rising settler violence

Christian communities in the West Bank, particularly in the village of Taybeh, are facing increasing violence and intimidation from militant Israeli settlers. In Taybeh, a village with deep historical ties to early Christianity, residents report frequent harassment, including theft, property damage, and shootings. In one instance, settlers reportedly prevented locals from extinguishing a wildfire.

The village is currently surrounded by several Israeli settlements and numerous illegal outposts. The NGO Peace Now reports approximately 360 such outposts and settler farms in the West Bank. This environment of insecurity is contributing to a decline in the local Christian population, which is estimated at 40,000 to 50,000 people in the West Bank, representing about one percent of the total population.

In response to these escalating tensions and attacks on religious sites, Christian patriarchs and church leaders from Jerusalem have visited Taybeh to show solidarity with the local community. The situation is further complicated by economic instability and a potential collapse of medical services due to withheld funds for the Palestinian Authority.
