Christian Council of Ghana calls for constitutional reforms

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) is advocating for significant constitutional reforms to improve governance, resource management, and executive accountability.

Rev. Enoch Nii Narh Thompson, Chairman of the Ghana Christian Council, has called for the integration of sustainable mineral exploitation principles into the nation’s constitutional review. He emphasized that the legal framework must prioritize environmental safeguards, transparency, and community participation to prevent resource depletion and ensure that mining wealth benefits local populations and future generations.

Separately, during a constitutional review engagement in Accra, the Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo urged for reforms to limit presidential appointment powers and strengthen institutional independence. Dr. Boafo also advocated for a stronger National Development Planning Commission to ensure national budgets align with long-term development goals. The Council expressed opposition to a proposal to extend presidential and parliamentary terms from four to five years, maintaining that the current four-year cycle is sufficient for policy implementation.
