Christian Cueva faces calls for Peru national team return amid improved form

Peruvian footballer Christian Cueva is experiencing a resurgence with Sport Boys in the Liga 1 2026 season. After a period of inconsistent form, Cueva has become a key player for the club, recording three goals and five assists in 22 matches across his time with Sport Boys and Juan Pablo II de Chongoyape.

Due to his improved performance, there are calls for his return to the Peru national team. Journalist Pedro García has urged head coach Mano Menezes to personally oversee Cueva’s physical recovery, suggesting the team should provide him with top-tier nutritional and personal training support to ensure he is fit for international duty.

Reflecting on his career, Cueva also addressed past criticism, specifically recalling an incident from the 2018 World Cup when a fan insulted him following a missed penalty. Cueva noted that while the situation was difficult at the time, he can now laugh about it and remains focused on performing well in his current professional commitments.
