Christian Horner discusses Red Bull technical focus and junior driver promotions

Former Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has addressed the team's technical development strategy and the management of its junior driver program. Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Horner confirmed that the engineering direction of Red Bull's cars has been intentionally tailored to meet the specific driving requirements of Max Verstappen.

Horner noted that since 2018, Verstappen’s extreme demands for front-end grip have led the engineering department to align its development tools and orientation toward his preferences, sometimes at the expense of the car's overall balance. This technical focus has been linked to the performance fluctuations of other drivers, such as Sergio Pérez.

Additionally, Horner commented on the promotion of Red Bull junior drivers, including Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, and Liam Lawson. He suggested these drivers were promoted to the senior team too early in their development. Horner attributed this rapid progression to Helmut Marko’s desire to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Red Bull Junior Team by quickly moving talent into Formula 1.
