Christian Horner's F1 return potential grows as Renault veto expires
The expiration of Renault’s three-year veto over the sale of Otro Capital’s 24 per cent stake in the Alpine Formula 1 team has potentially cleared a path for Christian Horner’s return to the sport.
According to Alpine’s Articles of Association filed with the UK’s Companies House, the veto officially expired on September 7. Horner, the former Red Bull team principal who was dismissed in July 2025 following a 20-year tenure, has been linked to Alpine. He has expressed interest in a role that includes an equity stake, similar to the ownership model held by Mercedes’ Toto Wolff.
Otro Capital originally purchased its stake in 2023 for $200 million, valuing the team at $900 million. Alpine executive advisor Flavio Briatore recently suggested the team’s valuation has risen to $3.2 billion. While Renault retains the ability to veto up to three offers following the expiration date, sources indicate this may not pose a significant obstacle for credible bidders.
