Christian Institute warns UK cohabitation rights plans may undermine marriage

The Christian Institute has issued a warning regarding a UK government consultation into granting cohabiting couples rights similar to those of married couples. The proposed plans aim to provide greater financial security to “vulnerable groups” following a relationship breakup by allowing a financially weaker partner to receive support from a better-off partner.

Critics argue these proposals could disincentivize marriage and create legal obligations for individuals who have not made a formal commitment. Simon Calvert, Deputy Director of The Christian Institute, stated that the plans force financial and legal obligations onto people without marriage, which could fuel the myth of “common law marriage” and create potential injustices regarding wealth distribution.
