Christian invocations to the Holy Spirit
Two significant Christian prayers to the Holy Spirit are highlighted for their beauty and complementary nature. The first, attributed to French Cardinal Jean Verdier (1864-1940), combines an invocation for guidance in thought, speech, and action with an ancient prayer by Saint Thomas Aquinas requesting intelligence, memory, discernment, and eloquence.
The second prayer, attributed to Belgian Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier (1851-1926), is characterized by a more intimate and trusting tone, focusing on submission to divine will. Mercier also recommended a daily practice of five minutes of silence and inner reflection to achieve holiness and happiness by entering the sanctuary of the soul.
