Christian Kukuk withdraws horse Checker from German Olympic squad
Olympic champion Christian Kukuk has withdrawn his horse, Checker, from the German equestrian squad. Because Kukuk does not have another horse currently in the Olympic roster, the decision also means he is no longer part of the German elite squad.
While initial reports suggested the move might be a reaction to Kukuk being named as a reserve rather than a primary rider for the World Championships in Aachen, Kukuk has clarified that the decision was not a “short-circuit reaction.” He stated that the plan to remove the 16-year-old horse from the squad was decided weeks before the World Championships and was communicated to national coach Otto Becker in advance.
Kukuk cited sporting considerations regarding Checker's age and career path as the primary reason. Although he expressed disappointment regarding the communication surrounding his reserve role at the World Championships, he noted that participation in the 2028 Olympics is not fundamentally off the table.
