Christian leaders meet Kharge to demand anti-conversion law repeal

A Christian delegation led by Bangalore Archbishop Peter Machado met with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to demand the repeal of the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2022. The delegation expressed concerns that the anti-conversion law impacts constitutional freedoms and the right to practice and propagate faith.

In addition to the repeal, the group requested a separate 1% reservation for the Christian community under the Backward Classes category to address socio-economic challenges in education and employment. They also sought the nomination of a Christian representative to the Legislative Council and increased representation on various government boards, corporations, and statutory bodies.

Kharge reportedly provided a “patient and attentive hearing” and assured the delegation that he would take up their concerns.
