Christian martyrs Carp, Papyl, Agathodor, and Agatonika commemorated

The Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of the holy martyrs Carp, Papyl, Agathodor, and Agatonika. The group, which included a priest or bishop, a doctor, and a deacon, lived in the late second and early third centuries.

Originally from Pergamum in modern-day Turkey, the martyrs were persecuted during the reign of Roman Emperor Decius. According to religious tradition, they were apprehended by Proconsul Valerius in Asia Minor for refusing to renounce their Christian faith. Despite facing torture, the group remained steadfast in their beliefs.

Historical accounts and traditions note that Carp served in Thyatira and Papyl was a deacon known for healing the sick through prayer. The martyrs were eventually executed by beheading following their refusal to participate in pagan sacrifices.
