Christian McCaffrey sees increased efficiency under 49ers workload plan
The San Francisco 49ers have implemented a workload management strategy for running back Christian McCaffrey that is yielding increased efficiency. In 2026, McCaffrey's yards per attempt rose to 4.7 from 3.9 the previous year, while his success rate increased to 55.6%.
This improvement is attributed to a reduction in his offensive snap count, which dropped from 80% last season to 69% this year. The team has utilized rookie Kaelon Black to handle more short-yardage and goal-line situations, as well as snaps during multi-score leads or garbage time. While Black's total yardage is lower than previous backups, his 56% success rate on carries has allowed McCaffrey to remain well-rested for two-minute drills and long-distance plays.
