Christian Nodal's 'El Forajido' trademark dispute with longtime band

The Mexican music group El Forajido says it has used the name since the early 1990s and is the legitimate trademark holder. It is challenging singer Christian Nodal’s request to register the name with the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI) and denied rumors that Nodal’s father, Jaime González, intervened or supplied money to block the singer.

Nodal has been seeking transparency over a family contract that reportedly allocates 50 % of his concert earnings to his father, 10 % to his mother and 40 % to himself, amounting to roughly 40 million pesos. He may pursue legal action against his father if the accounting is not clarified. The trademark registration remains pending.

The group asserted, “We have been using the name since 1992‑93, more than three decades,” and warned that “we do not think the registration can be granted because it is the same sector.”
