Jerusalem Christian schools strike over teacher permit denials

Christian schools in Jerusalem have suspended classes following the non-renewal of entry permits for over 70 teachers and staff members residing in the West Bank. The Christian Schools Custodian of the Holy Land and the Christian Schools General Secretariat (CSCS) announced an indefinite strike, stating the decision to deny permits was made suddenly and without prior warning.

The shortage of personnel affects not only teaching but also administrative, technical, and support roles, impacting approximately 8,500 students. While some permits were reportedly renewed shortly after the announcement, many staff members have only received temporary authorizations, leaving the resumption of activities fragile.

The crisis follows a January policy from the Israeli Ministry of Education that limits the employment of teachers holding diplomas from the Palestinian Authority. This move is part of a broader effort to integrate the educational system into the Israeli curriculum, a shift that affects at least 45,000 students in the region.
