Austria Chancellor proposes state wealth fund for pensions
Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) has proposed the creation of a state wealth fund to secure the long-term future of the national pension system. Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian models, Stocker suggests investing approximately half of the profits generated by state-owned enterprises into this fund. He estimates this could generate roughly 700 million euros annually for long-term investments rather than immediate budget expenditures.
The proposal has received support from the Young People's Party (JVP), which argues that shifting from a purely pay-as-you-go system to a capital-based model is necessary to address demographic shifts. However, Birgit Gerstorfer, president of the Pensionists Association of Austria (PVÖ), criticized calls for raising the retirement age, arguing that such moves do not create jobs and merely shift costs to other social security systems.
In a separate policy stance, Chancellor Stocker called for a constitutional ban on political Islam, stating that religious beliefs should not be used for political purposes and emphasizing the importance of gender equality in Austrian society.
