Christian Vigenin calls for stronger data protection in AI regulation
During a plenary debate in Strasbourg regarding the strengthening of global artificial intelligence governance, MEP Christian Vigenin emphasized that citizens require robust protection of their personal information. Serving as the rapporteur for the Socialists and Democrats group on the ‘AI Omnibus’, Vigenin argued that simplifying regulations must not lead to deregulation or allow companies to bypass privacy safeguards.
Responding to concerns raised by Polish MEP Arkadiusz Mullerczyk regarding Europe potentially falling behind the United States and China due to strict oversight, Vigenin maintained that regulation does not hinder development. He cited the United States as an example where a lack of regulation and specific data center construction methods have caused social issues and a loss of public support. Vigenin asserted that while Europe may not be the first or the leader in AI currently, it has established a comprehensive regulatory framework that must now be effectively implemented through international cooperation and common standards.
