Christiane Karg and Malcolm Martineau open 33rd Lied Cycle

Soprano Christiane Karg and pianist Malcolm Martineau will inaugurate the 33rd Lied Cycle, a co-production between the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM) and the Teatro de la Zarzuela. The opening recital, titled ‘Jugendstil Lieder/Belle Époque’, focuses on the musical and cultural transformations of turn-of-the-century Europe.

The program features a diverse repertoire, including works by Amy Beach, Claude Debussy, Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Gustav Mahler, Alma Mahler, and Richard Strauss. The performance aims to explore the dialogue between tradition and modernity, ranging from French ‘lamélodie’ to the evolution of Central European musical languages.

The 33rd edition of the cycle will consist of eight recitals throughout the season, featuring various prominent performers such as Andreas Schager, Julian Prégardien, Ian Bostridge, and Julia Kleiter.
