Germany's Merz faces CDU backlash over cabinet reshuffle
Chancellor Friedrich Merz is facing significant internal criticism within the CDU following a controversial cabinet reshuffle. Rhineland-Palatinate Minister President Gordon Schnieder has publicly condemned the management of the reorganization, stating that the “tumult destroys trust” and undermines the government's perceived effectiveness.
A central point of contention involves the dismissal of Federal Minister Patrick Schnieder. The process became complicated when the designated successor, Fritz Güntzler, withdrew his acceptance shortly before the announcement. This led to a period of uncertainty that ended only when Patrick Schnieder requested his own resignation to resolve the situation.
Additionally, the replacement of Christiane Schenderlein as State Minister for Sport and Volunteerism has drawn criticism. Schenderlein, who has moved to the Federal Ministry of Health, expressed disappointment over her dismissal but noted that Merz sought a successor with higher public visibility. DFB Vice President Hermann Winkler has called for a swift appointment to ensure political support for upcoming major sporting events and bids.
