Christianity honors the martyrdom of Saint Eustace and Prince Michael

Religious traditions honor the lives and martyrdoms of Saint Eustace and Prince Michael of Chernigov.

Saint Eustace, a Roman military leader during the reigns of Titus and Trajan, converted to Christianity after witnessing a vision of a cross between a stag's antlers while hunting. Despite facing the loss of his wealth and the separation from his family, he eventually reunited with them. He was ultimately martyred under Emperor Hadrian for refusing to sacrifice to idols.

Prince Michael of Chernigov and his counselor Theodore are recognized for their faith during the Mongol invasion of 1240. After refusing to participate in pagan rituals demanded by a priest, both men were beheaded. Their steadfastness reportedly influenced the Mongol khans to cease requiring conquered Russians to perform pagan rituals.
