Christians in Israel report rising fears of religious harassment

Christians in Israel, who constitute less than 2% of the population, are reporting increased fears of harassment due to rising regional conflicts and polarization following the October 7, 2023, attacks.

Incidents of verbal and physical hostility, such as spitting and violent attacks on religious figures in Jerusalem’s Old City, have prompted some community members to seek protection from Jewish volunteers. While some Christians in northern Israel express concern that the state provides insufficient protection for non-Jewish citizens, interfaith leaders note signs of progress through improved policing and the appointment of a Greek Orthodox government envoy to the Christian community.

Despite these tensions, religious groups continue to hold communal activities, such as recent Catholic pilgrimages to Mount Tabor, as a means of maintaining faith and promoting coexistence.
